To ask and to receive here is the promise that Jesus makes to us here… I do not know what is your experience in prayer, on the other hand what I do know is that the will of Christ is to grant us by giving us what we ask for . So let's never let our experience become our standard, let's always stay in the faith that His truth becomes our reality! To better understand this verse, it is important to situate the context in which Jesus is speaking. He is with His disciples for His last meal before His arrest and crucifixion. His dialogue and His teachings are therefore of particular importance and you can read this in John 13 to 17. And the answer to prayer comes back regularly, such: “… whatever you ask in My Name, I will do it…” ( John 14:13), “if you ask anything in My Name, I will do it” (John 14.14), “… ask whatever you want, and it will be granted to you” (John 15: 7), “… for whatever you ask of the Father in My Name, He will give it to you. ” (John 15:16), “… whatever you ask of the Father He will give you in My Name” (John 16:23), “… ask and you will receive” (John 16:24). God not only wants to answer you, but promises to do so!
Another aspect of the context is that Jesus was always present with His disciples, He was the source of their provision but things are about to change. He announces to them His departure and the coming of the Holy Spirit (cf. John 16: 7). The promise of the coming of the Holy Spirit and total dependence on God are also elements that come up constantly in these few chapters ... For if Christ remains the entire source of our provision (cf. Colossians 2:10), the Holy Spirit has an essential role so that we can live His provision and the answer to all our prayers ...
In the above verse, Jesus says “in that day you will not ask me any more questions”. This is directly linked with the role of the Holy Spirit who is the One who teaches us all things and who leads us into all truth (cf. John 14:26 and John 16:13). The Holy Spirit doesn't just come and live in us, He reveals to us who Jesus is, His nature, His will, His Word, His Power, His character, etc. This allows us to no longer pray, ask, like beggars but with the assurance of His answer and His power. The Holy Spirit who lives in you, wants to speak to you and release revelation so that when you ask you know that you are going to receive ... That is faith.
Understanding this allows us to live our prayer lives differently. Because knowing what to ask while having the assurance of receiving allows us to pray in a specific way and with precision. In addition, we are not surprised when the answer arrives. Another thing that may need to change is not to rush into immediately asking God and multiplying words (cf. Matthew 6: 7). We are invited to come before God in Jesus' Name - “He will give it to you in My Name” - which means that not only do we have access to the Father, but also to what Christ has acquired for us on the cross. This is where we can ask the Holy Spirit to speak to us and reveal to us what to ask for… And after that we can ask, for we know that we have already received what we have asked for!
So don't wait, I'm sure you have a real need and that there are needs around you that you are aware of. Take a moment to discuss with the Holy Spirit, ask Him to reveal to you what to ask for. Then pray with authority and the assurance of having already been answered, because God always wants to answer you… And the world around you needs to experience and live the result of your prayers!
